  1. My plans for Sparkle have changed quite a bit because of a new development.
  2. I am now working for Apple in the QuickTime team. One negative aspect of 
  3. this is that I can now no longer be as free as I was with talk of what I'll
  4. be doing next. However there are positive aspects---what I am doing will get 
  5. into QuickTime at some point and benefit everyone directly, and I can do 
  6. rather more because I have access to QT souurces and undocumented functionality.

  8. Apple have said they are happy for me to continue to work on Sparkle and 
  9. release it for free. I plan to continue to do so. However the direction of 
  10. Sparkle will probably change. I'm spending most of my time (on work and 
  11. off) involved with my QT work and most of the ideas I had for future Sparkle 
  12. MPEG support and performance improvements will ne put into the QT code. 
  13. However there remain all sorts of areas of digital video that I'm interested 
  14. in but that I'm not dealing with through Apple, and those will be added to 
  15. Sparkle as I find time.

  21. Many people mail me asking about future plans. In an attempt to save 
  22. everyone's time, let me state what I know here.

  24. Audio support will be added ASAP. That and issues related to it are the 
  25. most important item now on my agenda.
  26. Applescript support will dribble in as I feel a need to take a break from 
  27. the complexities of dealing with MPEG.
  28. I would like to start playing with rate-limited MPEG encoding, but that's 
  29. complex stuff to get good results, so I can't suggest when I'll have 
  30. something useful. However I have some ideas for starting right away.
  31. Support for other small issues (for example showing previews when opening 
  32. files) will come in bits and pieces.

  34. These are the large goals. Many small things will be added simply as part 
  35. of the code cleanup. If you need something added that you imagine is 
  36. pretty trivial, mail me. It may be I can add it in a few hours and help 
  37. you, and it may be something I wouldn't otherwise think of.
